NEWS FROM THE ANNEX GARDEN

Annex blog.jpg

Hello garden friends! It has been a hot minute since I last said hello. I have been nurturing our newly planned and planted garden and it has kept me from communicating as regularly as I hoped. But here we are, together again, and I’m so grateful.

Togetherness is a big part of gardening. Gardening is a wonderful therapy - and we often experience that when we are alone in our garden space, but gardening as a community has a healing quality too. It heals us and unites us…and that’s very powerful. I hope you will join us often at the Annex. We are going to have regular summer activities when school is out and I would love to invite you to keep an eye on us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/GardenGnomeSociety/ and please reach out to me, Erin Riley at yourhopegarden@earthlink.net or text 323-605-5106 to be kept in the loop on Annex activities. There will be a summer veggie garden maintenance workshop, a butterfly-advocacy workshop (that’s the most L.A. thing I’ve ever said), a garden party, an art workshop with drawing time, and many volunteer opportunities. If you have a kid who needs hours, this is your chance.

Our first volunteer opportunity will be two consecutive days at the Annex: Sunday May 19th and Monday May 20th, 10am-1pm. We’ll meet to both learn and serve. We will have an educational garden tour, mini-Spring veggie gardening workshop and then all dig in to do some garden maintenance work together. Bring your pen and notebook to learn and your garden gloves to serve. Bring friends and kids but no pets.

The Highland Halls Garden Annex is located at the Sepulveda Basin Community Garden at 16633 Magnolia Blvd., Encino, CA 91406. From the main parking lot, walk west towards the community building and you run right into our beautiful garden. Please contact me with any questions or inquiries or just to say, sign me up!

I absolutely love gardening. And the reasons are numerous. One thing I love is how gardening makes me appreciate the awe and wonder of the natural world. Slowing down and and really noticing the small and quiet things is a good lesson for me. I tend to move pretty fast and sometimes hit auto-pilot (like when I find myself driving to school….but I’m not going to school) - gardening helps me breathe and appreciate and just be.

Here are some some garden appreciations, in photo form, from the Annex. I hope this gives you a little taste of what we are up to and inspires you to join us. Thanks for your support and look forward to meeting many of you soon!
